Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) Review
Today I will be reviewing Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973). Let me just start by saying that this movie takes place in Godzilla’s “super hero” era, a time of notoriously bad Godzilla films. The film does have redeeming qualities, the two new kaiju.
Many G-Fans hate the two new kaiju featured in the movie, but they are some of my favorites. The monsters in question are the title monster, Megalon, and the invention of one of the main characters, Jet Jaguar.
As you can see in the photos, Jet Jaguar is very similar to characters like Ultraman and Zone Fighter, which was a problem for some fans. I won’t deny this character does make the movie feel like a 30 minute, old school, super hero TV show. This is the complaint of many fans, who believe that the plot is not strong enough to carry a feature film. I absolutely agree, they should have put much more effort into the story.
Really, I can explain the whole plot in one paragraph. Goro, an inventor, creates a robot named Jet Jaguar. The Seatopians, an underwater race, are angry about the pollution from nuclear bombs in their waters, so they send out their god, Megalon. Jet Jaguar is kidnapped by the Seatopians, but Goro regains control via a hand held voice command system. He commands Jet Jaguar to go get Godzilla, and fight Megalon. The Seatopians call in Gigan from Space Hunter Nebula M. All of the monsters go toe-to-toe, and Godzilla and Jet Jaguar win, finishing Megalon off with a flying kick.
Yeah, it’s that simple. On a completely unrelated note, Godzilla looks terrible, look at the picture below if you are brave enough!
All in all, the movie was a disaster, but the 4 way fight at the end was decent, and the monsters (excluding Godzilla) looked good. I give this disaster a 5/10.
